How the Conflict Occur in Inner Mongolia

What do you imagine by the word ‘Mongolia’? For most people, this is a representative of Outer Mongolia: the republic of Mongolia. However, Mongolia is comprised of two main regions. The other region is Inner Mongolia, which locates inside China as an autonomous region. This region also has great nature and nomad culture. However, they are said to have been disappearing. Both the number of nomad people and the breadth of prairies are decreasing.  Consequently, many people claim that the way nomads live has completely changed in Mongolia. The fact that Chinese government, which is mainly dominant by Han people, has different sense of values from Mongolian people have brought the cultural, environmental and economic problems. Recently, this difference has been resulting in conflict between the two races.

Chinese government governs its huge territory. For them, the power of restraint is an effective way to make sure that people of minor races are under their control. In Mongolia, nomads usually do not divide the territory, because any land belong to no one. This can be the important part of nomad culture, in that nomad culture has been created in the situation that people are always moving around. They need to move around to keep supplying glasses to animals. However, Chinese government made them settle in one place so that government can easily see where they live and who owns a certain land. Today, the land is divided by the easy walls made by wires. This makes it difficult for horses to run through the prairie. People built their own houses instead of traditional ger.

Traditional life of nomad people is a result of accumulation of the knowledge, which has been created in the prairie. Especially because they are so dependent on nature, it is so important to protect both nature and culture. They know how to deal with nature, as long as they know the environment. In the situation that the prairie, the main resident of nomads, is being divided and changed, they have few clues to maintain their tradition. In terms of culture, they stop moving around and keeping knowledge, so the number of nomads are decreasing.  In terms of environment, the animals such as sheep and goats lose the option of lands to eat glasses. In the end, it is reported that the prairie is turning into the wilderness due to the over eat of glasses.

Furthermore, some report show that nomads are experiencing economic problems. In traditional nomad life, people obtain what they need from the nature everywhere around. They can make clothes, houses and alcohols. However, when the environment is insufficient, they need to buy these stuffs. For nomads who have been making their lives with nature, it is not easy to make enough money to buy them. They need to sell what they made by using natural resources in cheap prices. Even when they no longer live as nomad and working in the city, there is economic gap with Mongolia people and Han people who are accustomed with capitalism. As they tend to be superior to Mongolian people in economy, some of the lands in prairie are owned by Han people, so this also make nomad people feel that they are oppressed by Han people.

Chinese government want to rule the Inner Mongolia smoothly. Being able to trace people is necessary factor for the smooth government. In the situation that you feel that you are supervised, you hesitate to revolve government. So it is natural for Chinese government to divide the land and stop them from moving around as they do to another people in China. It is unclear whether the government recognize how important for nomad people to be able to move around the large prairie, however, it is clear that this settlement policy is making nomad people to feel that the culture, the nature and the economy of Mongolia are being deteriorated.

For Mongolian people, Han people can be a thread. Chinese government is dominated by Han people. Han people are also oppressing them in the economy. If the government was comprised of Mongolian people, they would try to cherish their own traditional culture. However, both government and Mongolian people are recognizing nomad culture to be different from Han culture. When there is a problem between these   two cultures, it is often connected with the difference of two races regardless of other factors. These facts are resulting in the hatred of Mongolian people towards Han people. The Chinese government also recognize this hatred as revolve toward government and try to oppress it. This is how the difference of sense of value result in the conflict between the two races. I hope I can do something to solve these problems.

This is what I wrote in my school essey, but I'm not sure if all of this is true. What I want you to know is that these information are almost all coming from those who I met in Inner Mongolia tour. They are ...at least not the China part. How do you think? I want to keep providing information about Mongolia. Thank you.
